As we know, the Balkans has suffered from the worst flooding in 150 years. There are nearly 50 casualties and tens of thousands of people have lost their homes.

When Ph.D. student Ana Andjelkovic heard about the tragedy in her native region she decided to act. Ana gathered a group of colleagues from the Tampere BioMediTech Institute organized a fundraising event at the Pyynikki beach in Tampere in order to help the victims of the floods.

Because the beach event turned out to be successful, Ana wanted to expand the charity work to also local hospital restaurants. Collection boxes are at the BioMediTech Institute and Kauppi Campus Pikante restaurants as we speak. Ana also considers organizing a few additional events in Tampere. The collected money is targeted to the Balkans, where a Finnish Red Cross logistics expert is coordinating the help with locals Red Cross personnel.

“It broke my heart seeing thousands of people lost their loved ones, their belongings and everything they worked for their entire lives. Under these circumstances it is heart wrenching to see people, who themselves own very little, helping those in need. I could not just do nothing, I had to act”, says Ana Andjelkovic about her involvement.

Donating money is economically and logistically the wisest thing to do at this point. Various national Red Crosses are helping the local Red Crosses on location. Experts on site coordinate the funds to be used effectively by giving emergency aid and supplies to those suffering from the catastrophe.

Ana Andjelkovic would like to thank all the Finnish Red Cross parties that have invested their resources in handling the crisis. She also wants to thank the directors of the BioMediTech and the University hospital for giving permission for fundraising.
